Merlin was an Esso oil salesman

who loved Louise for 50 years

& left her to miss him for another 30.

I was fortunate to marry his grand-daughter

& we're approaching 30 together.

They sold the farmhouse recently

auctioned it and everything to do with it

even the gas pump next to the tool shed

& the barn with generations of memories

scratched into its walls.

As we walked out the open screen door

for the last time, I picked up the iron doorstop

that saw it all and gave it a different view.
