Fall
By Stephen Howe

The shadows of winter
danced with grey clouds
bleeding leaves fled filtered sunlight
& the lawnmowers last assault
Burning oak & apple mingled
with sweet squash soup
& cornbread fulfilled us

Coat Tree
By Stephen Howe

He stands silent & erect in the corner
bundled with all of our armor
Reaching for the sky, and
dripping with a family's winter

His smile is winkingly visible when
April melts the stifling layers &
he can breathe again, the coats & hats
banished to the basement

Heavy
By Stephen Howe

The willow groaned with the weight of the
incessant snowfall. Then Sunday morning,
bright sun, it wept tears for last day of
Winter, for 1 st day of Spring.
Suddenly, the willow began her 80th year.
