College, week 1
By Stephen Howe

The sky smiled
on the young man as he
sat in a sea of peers
buoyed by their common enthusiasm
he opened his book to Chapter 2

He knew someone who lived cross-campus
a new World away
"grow where you're planted"
he remembered
tethered by cell towers
he hoped the string between the cans wouldn't break
the stronger ones don't

The dorm is full of friends he hasn't met
He saw an open door
& faked out the frisbee defender
