9/10/06
By Stephen Howe
Floating at 120 knots, my instructors voice squawks
It's the day before 9/11, & we're alone in the sky
I scan the horizon on a Sunday that seems clear enough to
see the shadows of the skyscrapers in New York
There were no airplanes
& though my ears are covered with gel-filled 2006 technology
my eyes are not closed
in the see-no-evil caricature of 2001
Above is the same sun that warms
the virgin-mad-men in Iraq
below, the patchwork quilt of thousands of families
their amber waves not stained by unfulfilled promise & aluminum
There are no airplanes
The planet spins on in a macabre dance of elation and depression
births & deaths, some are held tightly in it's protective arms
other unfortunates flung into the vacuum of the next life
Squawk. See the silver silos?
Let's turn left there, or whatever feels right
